You can also visit Augustenborg Castle, which is one of the most beautiful Baroque castles in Denmark.
In the park you can see the remains of the same linden tree, which provided shade for HCAndersen when he visited the castle in his time. Maybe this is where he got inspired for the fairy tale about "The little girl with the matchsticks".
For more than 75 years, parts of the Castle have functioned as a psychiatric hospital, the psychiatry has subsequently been gathered in Aabenraa and the castle now houses the Danish Agency for Agriculture, which is why there is no public access.
The Mini Museum at the bell tower gives you an insight into the history of the Duke family.
Augustiana, which is located in connection with the castle, is a cultural and architectural gem with a long and colorful history behind it and an exciting future as an international art park and art hall ahead of it.
Augustiana focuses on professional contemporary art and presents year-round a varied exhibition program in the art gallery as well as projects, experiences and works of art in the park.
In connection with public holidays and exhibition changes, it may be closed; See calendar.
The Art Hall has fixed opening hours, while the Art Park is open 24 hours a day, all year round. Lunch in the café is included in your stay price.
Sønderborg Castle, the large red castle that lies dramatically at the entrance to the narrow strait of Alssund. The castle was founded way back in the 1200th century and has a long and dramatic history.
The castle stands out for visitors by having two major attractions – the castle itself and the museum section with the many exhibitions.
As for the castle, you can enjoy the castle church, the chapel and several beautiful halls, not least the Knight's Hall which is quite impressive.
On the museum front, the castle has several permanent exhibitions where you can learn more about the history of Southern Jutland, all the way back to ancient times.
